The greatest athletes in the world use meditation to reduce anxiety, nervousness, and stress.  Meditation can be done prior to training and the sporting event.  Once the athlete is calm they can focus on positive affirmations or visualize themselves executing every part of the game to perfection.  Meditation starts by deep slow breathing from the lower diaphram, slowly filling the upper diaphram, then in a controlled fashion breathing out.  The objective is to focus on breathing and slowly letting thoughts drift from the mind.  One can focus on a word or an object while breathing.  Sounds easy?  It may seem that way.  The most difficult part of meditation is controlling your thoughts and sitting still for a period of time.  But once you overcome those obstacles nervana is in the palm of your hands.  Many athletes experience being in the "Zone" during their game or sporting event which is being in the "Present" or in a "Trans" like focus state where time has slowed down and everything you do or what needs to be done is effortless.
